About

The very first time tOfuS was conceived, it was thought as an operating system geared towards musicians, without really thinking what this implied.

After some years of slacking, here is a set of goals the project should ideally achieve.

  • It should be a general purpose kernel and operating system with a special interest for music and multimedia.
  • It should be flexible and scalable enough to power both high-end workstations and mixers.
  • It should allow true real-time scheduling for those who need it.
  • It should provide easy access to number crunching power through a consistent, stable, and reasonable API.

Some of the applications may be

  • easing music production and performance;
  • providing a reference environment for sound and music computing research;
  • making it easy to develop multimedia applications through a well designed API.

Q: Why a new operating system? We do have MacOS X for multimedia, or even BeOS (Haiku, actually). Why not contributing to Haiku?

A: Haiku is trying to be a clone of BeOS the day it died, it has its design, its strength, and its weaknesses. tOfuS is going to take the good from everyone, the years of operating system research, and putting it all together. It's going to be a 2011 operating system, and next year it's going to be a 2012 OS, and in five years it's going to be a 2017 OS, having no fear of discarding aging parts of its design favoring the state of the art as it comes day by day.

Anyway, not that we have much code, nor we have much time. One thing we have is dedication and the will to make tOfuS happen.
